Full Prescribing Information
Denopsy 14 mg (teriflunomide) is a once-daily pill to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). In clinical trials, teriflunomide has shown a significant positive effect on the 3 measures of MS disease activity: Slowing of disability progression; Fewer brain lesions on MRI; Reduction of relapses. It is a type of immunomodulatory drug, called a pyrimidine synthesis inhibitor. The active ingredient in Denopsy 14 mg tablet is teriflunomide. It is made by Natco India Ltd.
It is not fully understood how this medicine works in multiple sclerosis because the disease and its cause are not fully understood. However, Denopsy 14 mg teriflunomide does have recognized anti-inflammatory properties which may inhibit the immune response thought to be involved in MS. As an autoimmune disease, MS is believed to develop when the immune system becomes overactive and begins attacking the nerves in the central nervous system (CNS), causing demyelination. This medication inhibits a key enzyme called dihydroorotate dehydrogenase that is required by lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell involved in the immune system) for normal functioning. Denopsy 14 mg tablets decrease the production of two specific types of lymphocytes, T-cells, and B-cells, which play a key role in promoting CNS inflammation that causes demyelination.
How do you know your treatment is working? During your course of treatment, your doctor will monitor your response to Denopsy 14 mg through a variety of tests and procedures. These usually include a neurologic examination to evaluate your nerve and muscle function, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the extent of inflammatory activity in your brain and spinal cord. Other tests and procedures may also be required during the course of treatment.
Use in Pregnancy - This medicine should not be used during pregnancy as it could be harmful to a developing baby. Before you start treatment your doctor may want to do a pregnancy test to make sure that you are not pregnant.
Women who may become pregnant should use an effective method of contraception to prevent pregnancy, both during treatment and after stopping treatment, until the levels of Denopsy 14 mg tablets in your blood have fallen low enough to not be a risk to a developing baby. This can take up to two years after stopping treatment. The level of medicine in your blood can be confirmed with a blood test.
If you think you could be pregnant at any point during treatment or in the two years after stopping this multiple sclerosis medicine, or if you want to plan a pregnancy after stopping treatment, you should tell your healthcare provider straight away. Just stopping taking medicine is not enough because Denopsy 14 mg (teriflunomide) stays in the body for a long time. You will need to actively eliminate the drug from your body by taking certain other medicines. Seek further medical advice from your doctor.
Use in Breastfeeding - Denopsy Teriflunomide may pass into breast milk and could have unwanted effects on a nursing infant. Women who need treatment with this multiple sclerosis medication should not breastfeed. Seek further medical advice from your healthcare provider.
Use in Children and Adolescents - Do not give it to a child or adolescent. This medicine is not approved for use in children or adolescents under 18 years old.
Other Medical Conditions - Always ensure that your doctor is aware of any other health problems you may have. This includes high blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney disease, diabetes, infections, or other illnesses.
Drinking Alcohol - Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. The effects of alcohol could be made worse while taking Denopsy 14mg tablets. It is recommended that you minimize your alcohol intake while taking this generic MS medication.
